Mold Inspection and Mold Removal-Horses and Mold

Mold Inspection and Mold Removal-Horses and toxic Mold

To many of us, our pets are a part of our family. We spend countless hours tending to their needs and almost every want. We take them to the vet for regular check-ups and shots just like any family member. Why? Because they are a part of our family. Not many of us have taken the time to think about how mold may affect our pets. Let's take a few moments of our time to consider the effects mold could have on our pets.
In 2001, the state of Kentucky lost over 200 horse foals. Thoroughbred foals, at that. The cause; a mold based toxin in pasture grasses. Wow, a mold based toxin, powerful enough to kill over 200 animals! That's a serious mold problem. Not many people think about how a mold problem can affect the very expensive lifestyle of raising thoroughbreds. All it would take is for this specific species of mold to hit a heavily horse populated area like Lexington, Kentucky or Ocala, Florida and thousands of livelihoods could be ruined. Millions of dollars of investments in the prosperous field of horse breeding would be forfeit! It sounds silly. It's not so silly when you have made these investments and lost them to something as stupid as mold.
So what can be done to protect the investments we make in horse breeding from falling to mold? Well, there are several things. First, call a professional in mold testing. The soil that grows the grass that horses graze on has to be tested for mold and toxins. Second, test the feed you have bought. While you have a professional on your property, have him or her test your horses' feed, whether it be grain or hay-based.
Now, the difficult part - your neighbors. If you own land where horses are being bred, more than likely, so are your neighbors. Let's not forget that mold spreads through the air by microscopic particles, called spores. Mold that is growing on a neighbors property could easily spread to wreak havoc on your fields. Encouraging your neighbors to get tested for mold might keep your animals safe and help to give you peace of mind. Most insurance companies don't cover mold damage - so remember, better safe than sorry!
